What 'BBW' actually means — and where SSBBW and BHM fit

BBW is one of the most common tags in adult content and one of the least understood as a word. Most people can tell you roughly what it points at, but the actual definition, where it came from, and how it relates to the neighbors — SSBBW, BHM — usually gets a shrug. It was coined in 1979 by Carole Shaw, who launched BBW Magazine as a fashion-and-lifestyle title for plus-size women — years before it ever became a search tag. The word got adopted by adult content later, but its origin is a magazine built to tell larger women they were beautiful. Worth knowing, because it changes how you read the word.

BBW, SSBBW, BHM: how the family fits

The related terms aren't synonyms; they're more specific filters:

• BBW — Big Beautiful Woman. The general term for a plus-size woman.
• SSBBW — Super-Sized Big Beautiful Woman. The same idea at a larger size; "super-sized" is the only thing the extra S's are doing.
• BHM — Big Handsome Man. The male counterpart — a plus-size man, framed the same desirable way BBW frames women. In an adult-content context that's all it means; the same three letters otherwise get used for Black History Month or the Birmingham airport code, which is why the porn-context search is its own thing.
